Kolby had his first ski lesson on Saturday. Tyler and I spent the day skiing as well. After a day of lessons Kolby was very enthusiastic and wanted to keep skiing. We decided to take him on one last run to check out his new skills. The run we went to was different than the one he had been learning on all day. It was still an easy run but a long easy run. We soon found out (the hard way) that he had not yet mastered the essential snow plow skill. He crouched down and headed straight down the hill with his speed increasing dramatically. It was clear he was going to kill himself or someone else. He was able to stop himself by crashing or getting to a flat spot where he could slow down. By the time we discovered his lack of snow plowing or turning skills it was too late and there was no way off the mountain but down.
Unfortunately, the flat spots were very few so he endured many violent crashes on his way down the mountain. In the future... we will stick to the learning hill when we have him show us what he learned in lessons that day. I finally had to ditch Tyler and Kolby and make another run because I could no longer watch the gruesome scene.
The good news is that Kolby was not traumatised by the event and is looking forward to lessons next week.
Tyler and I enjoyed our ski day. The weather was great and so was the snow. Tyler was nice enough to ski with me most of the day which is a pretty big sacrifice on his part. He did leave me for a while and after going on a little hike found some pretty good powder.
Luckily, some nice snow boarder dudes were able to jump start the van at lunch when we discovered the battery had died. I had to think nicer thoughts about all of the snow boarders who tried to run me over the rest of the day since they were so willing to help. Someone left the lights on... I guess he was all excited to get on the mountain. We did have a prime parking spot so we could watch all the coming and goings while we let the battery charge back up.
There was an incident going up the lift on the first run of the day. I am not allowed to talk about it but apparently it is all my fault and the only reason it happened is because of Tyler's dedication and devotion to my well being. It can be said that I laughed hysterically and I was not the one embarrassed by the event. There were people who were quite concerned for his safety. OK... I was embarrassed a little because I was with him.
A public thank you to Aunt Mandy for driving up from Vegas to babysit Addie and Landry so we could have our ski day. I know some people are confused by the fact that we had to get a babysitter to babysit for the babysitter while she got her hair done. We will just go with that. I will pass on words of wisdom from our hairdresser - Mr. Pete - that he gave to Mandy. You should get your hair done by a straight man because straight men are the ones checking you out. So a straight hair dresser knows what makes you look good. That is why we love Mr. Pete.
